“I am an abstract painter working in an intuitive, process-driven way. The essence of landscape echoes through my work.”
I work with my materials in an attempt to capture an essence of time and place. I am continually exploring the themes of memory and landscape within the context of modern abstraction.
The tension of opposites is a recurring theme throughout my work and how an image can be both expansive and contained within the same painting.
Hard edged shapes intersect organic and free forms. Luminous veils of paint are often pulled or poured across dark forbidding background and solid planes of neutral colour rest quietly against highly active, textured surfaces.
As part of my practice I am always gathering an ever growing codex of images culled from the internet to metabolise and obscure, from animal X-rays, satellite photos to fauna and architecture.
Whilst my work is highly personal and linked to my own experiences, I hope it expresses a wider universal connection. The paintings could be seen as a response to the changes occurring in the natural world and what these might mean for us in these challenging times.
Biography
After graduating from art college Lex has continued to paint and further his exploration into abstraction. He has always held a great interest in romantic landscape painting, especially painters such as Turner who was, in his opinion, ‘a master of light’. Lex aims to embrace and capture the sublime nature of that period in painting and relocate it within in a contemporary context.
Lex works by layering paint and other materials including copper dust, inks and graphite using brushes, palette knives and rollers. He then works back into the painting, partially removing some layers to expose deeper, hidden surfaces across the different elements. Ultimately he is working with the materials to form and reveal the image.
Lex lives and works in London. He finds the architecture of the city provides a never ending source of inspiration, which is further informed by his extensive travels to wilder rural environments.
